Dorian Electra Celebrates the Clitoris in Song

It took a long time for the clitoris to get appreciated, and you could argue that it still hasn’t gotten its proper due. While there’s a major market for Viagra, Cialis, and other drugs designed to make penises erect, scientists have a history of being kind of… skittish about studying the clitoris. Maybe most notoriously, Freud declared that orgasms resulting from stimulation of the clit were a sign of sexual immaturity.

In the late 1940s, Dr. Charles Goss made the clit disappear entirely from the illustrations in the 25th edition of Gray’s Anatomy, the classic medical text. Whether it was an error or Goss had some kind of puritanical agenda is unknown. But after 90 years of being accurately depicted in the most famous anatomy text ever, the clit vanished.

But Goss wasn’t the only person to make the clit vanish. It’s still being done. A lot of people don’t even realize that the clit is more than that little nub — the glans — that nestles comfortably above the labia. The clit is much more expansive than that, with a system of nerves and blood vessels that branch out around the vulva. It’s not surprising that so many people miss these aspects of the clitoris; it wasn’t until the 1990s that scientists began looking at the clit’s internal structure with modern MRIs; in 2008, French gynecologists Odile Buisson and Pierre Foldés used ultrasound to produce the first 3-D image of a stimulated clitoris. They did it on their own, without funding.

In light of how little love the clitoris has gotten from scientists, doctors, and shrinks, it warmed our hearts (and other blood-conducting anatomical features) when this video by musician and performance artist Dorian Electra hit the Internet. It may not be the most comprehensive history or anatomical lecture, but it certainly makes the clitoris look like fun — which it is. In three minutes and forty-five seconds, Electra takes us from the days that Christian witch-hunters called the clit “the witch’s teat” through Freud’s hang-ups to modern attempts to (finally) get a proper look at it.

If scientists have had a problem with the clit, we don’t think that Stockroom can be accused of not thinking about it. We think about the clit quite a lot, actually. A lot of our toys and gear are designed specifically for clitoral pleasure because frankly, there are many, many ways to have fun with the clit beyond just rubbing it. Like we said before, it’s a big, complex network of nerves and blood vessels, and every one is different. If your curiosity is tweaked a little, we recommend that you take a look at some of our favorites:

The Viberite Double Agent

The Viberite Double Agent

The VibeRite Double Agent Attachment: We designed this to work with our VibeRite Cordless Massager, although it works well with most wand-style vibes, like the Magic Wand. The Double Agent is designed to bring the vibration inside, while sitting on top of the clit or perineum for some extra-intense fun.

Vibration isn’t the only way to make the clit feel good. Suction is also a favorite of many people and we’ve got a wide array of toys to cover all parts of the body. Using the Clitoral Suction Cylinder in tandem with our Basic or Deluxe Hand Pump is an excellent way to increase sensitivity for some delicious playtime.

Clits are gorgeous all on their own, but when you want to dress yours up for a special night out, we have clitoral jewelry that slides around the hood to combine a sensual feeling with additional beauty. Clit clips come in 14K gold or silver versions, with crystals in a variety of colors.
